You can start serving for free but can't proceed no longer. The fast growing blogging platform Tumblr went through a similar situation. Initially the founder of the service Mr. David Karp was against displaying ads on his platform, now he seems to be diverting from his previous stance. "Tumblr could monetise itself immediately by displaying Google's advertising, but that this would be "a complete last resort", said Mr Karp in an interview with Ad Age.
Fast growing blogging service, Tumblr.
The stance was strong when Tumblr was not
An interview to Los Angles Times in 2010 he said "i am opposed to advertisement on such platforms". Later he even used harsh words against his rivals google and Facebook for displaying paid advertisement, calling them "devoid of creativity". Some people think that this attitude of Mr. Karp was just a formula for attracting more users, otherwise ads free services make no sense for a platform like Tumblr. Now Tumblr has attained the position were it is serving millions of bloggers, Mr. Karp, like any other businessman was expected to take back his previous words.
